Two wheel touring in Newcastle

Newcastle is, quite simply, a city made for cycling. With plenty of purpose-built pathways and trails tailored to a diverse mix of abilities, visitors can meander along an easy track with the kids or hit the mountain biking circuit for a more intensive workout. Either way, sightseeing on two wheels opens up a whole new way to experience a city, and with so much to see from the bush to the beach and beyond, Newcastle has a track to suit all cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities.

The famous Bathers Way, running along the foreshore from Nobbys in the north to Merewether in the south, takes in views of the breakwater, the iconic art deco bathing pavilion at Newcastle’s Ocean Baths and the convict-constructed Bogey Hole – with a number of picnic spots and refreshment stops along the way.

Shipwreck walk takes cyclists around the harbour and out along the Stockton breakwall, where you’ll find plaques commemorating shipwrecks of bygone eras. Ride past spectacular Stockton Beach and out to Fern Bay, or roll through the countryside of Fullerton Cove before returning to Queens Wharf and Merewether via the city’s lively East End, including hip Darby Street with its brilliant boutique shopping and cool café culture.

A little further afield, the Fernleigh Track is an easy 16km trail running along an old railway line with beautiful bushland and birdlife to enjoy as you go. Beginning in the outer suburb of Adamstown and running to Belmont, it’s a safe and popular pathway and a firm family favourite.

Those with a little more steam in their legs will love the 40km Nature Trail Loop from Broadmeadow to Blackbutt Nature Reserve, not to mention checking out the koalas, emus, reptiles and perfect picnic spots when you get there.
