The Hellfire Cup

hellfire cup p image 5The Hellfire Cup is a 4 day mountain bike race that has attracted the largest elite field to travel to Tasmania and offers a top level professional prize pool  but that is not the focus of our event . The aim is to provide access to all competitors, spectators and support crew an atmosphere submerged in art, music and riding culture. They have a single race village where every stage starts and finishes removing the logistics and costs typically associated with stage racing for riders. Its is this village on a small farm property at Kellevie that we will be providing an opportunity for people to relax and socialise . Onsite are lots of services including a bar with our very own beer the “Hell Brew” from  Iron House brewery, one of Tasmania’s fine boutique microbreweries. We have a great entertainment line up ranging from cycling advocate and Violent Femme founding member Brian  Ritchie, playing with one of “ The Break” members Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil)  to local blues guitarists playing campfire sets.

new single track built for the race

The event riding covers the old milling tracks of the Wielangta (Koori for large tree) State Forest , purpose built single track and cruise stages through the coastal hamlet of Bream Creek that takes cyclists to the time trail stage where rider get amazing views of hellfire bluff when they erupt from the bush and return to the race village .  With stages being achievable by newcomers to mountain biking but still challenging it’s a course that we designed to highlight our love of riding Tassie trails.

Originally scheduled for January, the event was  postponed  till November after the devastating  bushfires in the south east. The event is part of the area’s economic recovery and the involves much of the local community.  In the first year nearly 50% of entrants are from overseas or interstate which has been a great boost to local tourism.
