Sarah Maddock 125-year Commemorative Cycling Tour

To celebrate women in cycling, Mulga Bicycle Tours is co-hosting a new tour inspired by the 1894 journey of Sarah Maddock, the first female to cycle from Sydney to Melbourne.

Mulga Bicycle Tours has partnered with a modern-day Sarah Maddock to develop the tour; an Adelaide-based cyclist who has been moved by the tales of her namesake.

Sarah was to complete the ride solo in 2018, but postponed due to injury. She has since joined forces with Mulga Bicycle Tours to develop a fully-supported tour, allowing other cyclists to join the journey.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Sarah to deliver this tour; a celebration of the 125th anniversary of Sarah Maddock’s journey from Sydney to Melbourne,” said Mark Arundel from Mulga Bicycle Tours.

“The 19th century Sarah Maddock was instrumental in the growth of women’s cycling in Australia, and this is a fitting way to honour her many achievements,” Sarah said.

Departing Camden on 28 August 2019, the 14-day bicycle tour includes stops in Goulburn, Wagga, Albury, Beechworth and Mansfield.

“Sarah and her husband Ernest followed what was known as the Great South Road, which is the busy Hume Highway today. As a result, we have modified the route for a more enjoyable ride, and to give our guests a sense of what the scenery and ambience would have been like for the couple,” Mark said.

“While the route may be slightly different, the celebration of Sarah’s adventurous spirit remains at the heart of the ride
by encouraging others to take their own modern- day adventure,” he said.

Mulga Bicycle Tours specialises in fully-supported bicycle tours across Australia including Victoria and Country NSW. They also develop customised tours and provide private tours on request.

Bookings for the Sarah Maddock commemoration ride are now open, with limited places available.
