On Track

The Anna Meares Velodrome is an indoor track facility located at the southern end of the Sleeman Sports Complex at Chandler in Queensland – an elite sports training hub that is home to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, BMX Super Cross Track, and training facilities for both weightlifting and gymnastics. Designed by COX Architecture, the 250-metre-long timber cycling track is set to be a centrepiece venue for the Commonwealth Games in 2018. The building itself sits within a eucalyptus forest. Its sweeping, undulating roof is inspired by the dynamics of cycling, lifting towards the straights of the track where the greatest number of seats are, and pulling down at the bends where there are fewer seats. Both water and energy-efficient, this velodrome boasts some fantastic sustainable features – including being the first in the world to have full LED broadcast-quality lighting.
