The Sydney Design Festival 2016 program has been released, featuring over 100 events in venues across Sydney from 2 – 11 September. Make or Break is the theme for this year’s festival and is embodied in the program’s range of exhibitions, talks and workshops.

Since 1996 the Sydney Design Festival has championed leading design practices from Australia and abroad. The festival is led by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) in collaboration with over 50 museums, galleries, universities, design studios, businesses, and community organisations across greater Sydney and NSW.

As a part of the festival you can join Indonesian designer Singgih Kartono (Spedagi and Magno) at MakerSpace & company in Marrickville for a bike building hackathon. They’ll be experimenting with bamboo bicycles using the Spedagi bicycle as a departure point.

The highly collaborative workshop will explore the bicycle as an object, as well as a global symbol of social change. Be ready to hack, weld, hammer and ride.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes and ideas. Designs generated in this workshop will contribute to a project to deliver bikes to Kandos, NSW, for Cementa 2017.

Cost: $60 (covers materials and lunch).

When: September 10, 2016. 10am – 4pm.
